Why do Yoga?

In our daily lives we have to deal with a great amount of emotional and mental pressure. Without an outlet for these pressures, the pressure can very quickly accumulate and cause physical and mental ailments/illnesses within our bodies. The symptoms can be anything from aches and pains, migraines/headaches, insomnia, digestive disorders and depression to name but a few. Yoga gives the body an outlet for such pressure and stress.

Yoga focuses on balancing the mind, body and sprit. With yoga’s unique combination of physical exercise (asana), breathing technique (Pranayama) and relaxation and meditation, one will find themselves living a much happier, healthier and contented lifestyle.

What are the benefits with Yoga?

There are countless books written on this subject, I am naming but a mere few here.

  • To be much more relaxed and calm in your everyday life.
  • To have a stronger/toned and more flexible body.
  • To achieve a much higher level of concentration.
  • To feel more confident.
  • To have a more graceful posture.
  • To spontaneously smile.

What are the basic rules for a yoga practice?

  • Always practice on an empty stomach and bladder (give between 2-4 hours). This allows the body to use its full source of energy. If the stomach is full the yoga poses could then become counterproductive and can lead to or aggravate existing digestive disorders.
  • Dress comfortably and have the correct equipment with you (mat, blocks, belt ect).
  • Relax the mind and body. Start the practice with a short relaxation or breathing exercise to bring your attention inward and focus on the breath and the practice ahead.
  • Before any asana’s (yoga poses) do some warming up exercises.
  • Whist doing your yoga practice do the practice with full awareness, kindness and care to your body.
  • Moving in and out of poses is just as important as the pose itself so try and keep the breath flowing at all times.
  • When the practice is over give yourself at least 10 minutes (more if you have the time) relaxation, so your body can feel fully relaxed and rejuvenated.

What is the Etiquette in a yoga class?

  • Arrive to the class between 5-10 minutes before the start of the class so you can feel relaxed and focused before you start your practice.
  • Respect your fellow students space and practice.
  • If you have any questions please ask at the beginning or end of the class as not to interrupt the flow or fellow students practice.
  • Switch off your mobile phone.

Do you have to be flexible to do yoga?

No you do not have to be flexible to practice yoga, as yoga is adaptable for all ages and abilities.

Is there any religious spin in the classes?

No all I ask is for students to keep a open mind and a light-hearted approach to their yoga practice.

What is the dumbest question you have ever been asked in Yoga?

The dumbest question is the question not dared to be asked! If you want to know an answer, however small or daft you think it may be, ask the question.
